The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body. Consequently, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.
The (NAAC) conducts assessment and accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) such as colleges, universities or other recognized institutions to derive an understanding of the ‘Quality Status’ of the institution. NAAC evaluates the institutions for its conformance to the standards of quality in terms of its performance related to the educational processes and outcomes, curriculum coverage, teaching-learning processes, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organization, governance, financial well being and student services.
Moreover, the assessment process provides an opportunity for the institution to;
- Measure its effectiveness and efficiency,
- Identify its strengths and weaknesses and take necessary steps for improvement.
Accreditation top grade enables graded autonomy, enhances research funding and allows online courses, off campuses, open programs, foreign collaborations and more.
It benefits students. Employers get drawn to top grade institutes for superior placements. Admissions abroad become easier to score for top grade institutes only.
The role of NAAC in ensuring the quality in defining the element of Higher Education in India through a combination of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiatives.
